Controlling The Game

For the sake of simplicity, only keyboard controls will be described in text. The following chart shows equivalents for mouse, joystick and keypad.

The Vertigo controls are modal; in different modes the same controls will induce different results. For instance, when the player is moving at moderate speed on a relatively level surface, the up arrow provides forward thrust. When the player is airborne in the middle of a jump, the same key-press will cause the skater to pitch forward. In the Moves section of this document the results of applying the controls under different circumstances are described in depth. For the basic controls in various modes the controls are as follows:

Moderate Speed on Smooth Level Surface

When the player presses the up arrow, his on-screen representation pushes with its left foot, providing forward thrust. Pressing the down arrow will cause the player to power-slide.

When the player presses the left or right arrow key, the skater will bank to the left or right, resulting in a gentle left or right-hand turn.

When the player presses the ‘A’ key, the skater will perform a vertical jump and then land, with luck, on the skateboard.

Mid-Air

In mid-air, the left and right arrows apply a very slight torque counter-clockwise or clockwise.

In mid-air, the up arrow gently pitches the skater forward. Pressing the down arrow pitches the skater back.

These two mid-air controls allow a flying skater to make slight course corrections for a better (not-crashing) landing.

Shift-Key

Holding down the shift key alters the mode slightly. It generally intensifies the effect of the current input. For instance, holding the shift key down while pushing forward applies more thrust.
