Vertigo Design Objects
Many immobile objects are features of the arenas. They are launching points for many maneuvers. Clearing an object such as a ramp, rail, or block, generates a base point value. The maneuver performed to clear the object adds an additional score. Location: Ramps are found in skateboard parks
and occasionally on city streets. A half pipe consists of two ramps facing
each other.
A ramp is a skater’s best friend.
It is essential for launching many moves, including Indies, Varials, Inverted
Indies and Fakies.
Ramps allow skaters to achieve very high altitudes and velocities. This is important for catching big air but it is also risky. Scoring: 20 points.
Stairs are found on the city streets that connect the arenas. Use: Short stairs can be cleared with a simple Ollie. Longer stairs can be cleared with fifty-fifties, railslides, five-ohs, nosegrinds, tailgrinds and more. Stairs themselves are not so interesting, but they are usually equipped with hand-rails. Risk: A skater who launches an Ollie too early could be in for a rough landing mid-way down a stairway. Scoring: 20 points.
Location: Curbs are found on the city streets
that connect each of the arenas.
Curbs are an ideal place to practice ollies. Since they are so much lower than most other obstacles, timing the ollie launch is not so important. Risk: An unwary skater can be sent sprawling by hitting a curb without first launching an ollie. Scoring: 10 points.
Location: Hand-rails accompany most stairs on the city streets that connect the arenas. Use: Hand-rails are a challenging surface for performing bluntslides, noseslides, tailslides and more. They are the only surface on which a skater can perform a railslide. Risk: Rails are tough. They require a well-aligned approach and excellent balance. Hitting a rail at the wrong angle can severely damage a player’s health rating. Scoring: 30 points.
Location: Big cement blocks are found on the city streets that connect the arenas. Use: Blocks are excellent surfaces for bluntslides, noseslides, tailslides, nosegrinds and tailgrinds. They are less risky than handrails. Blocks can also be used to practice timing of Ollies and for measuring length of jumps. Risk: Hitting a cement block hurts. Scoring: 20 points.
Location: Sign posts and utility poles are everywhere on sidewalks lining city streets. Use: Poles are generally dangerous obstacles. Under the right circumstances (with a high nearby ramp or ledge), they deliver high points as Ollie targets. Risk: It’s funny how these otherwise innocuous landmarks seem to appear directly in your path after completing a perfect stunt. Just one can ruin your whole day. Since they are usually thin and gray, you should get your bearings on them before starting your maneuver. Scoring: 100 points.
Location: Fire-hydrants populate the sidewalks
of city streets.
Use: Fire hydrants are ideal Ollie targets. Risk: Like poles, these short narrow obstacles are often hard to spot. Unlike poles, they can be cleared by a well-timed ollie. Scoring: 20 points.
Location: Parked cars are found throughout the city streets. Use: Cars are the extremists ollie target of choice. Antennas, glass windows and high roofs provide life-and-limb-threatening challenges. Risk: Parked cars are relatively tall ollie targets. It is very difficult to successfully clear them without causing damage to the car and injury to the skater. Scoring: No points awarded. Encouraging skaters
to ollie over cars is bad for both skaters and car-owners.
Location: Pylons are found in the city streets that connect the arenas and in the construction site arena. Mass / Friction: 4kg / .5 Use: Pylons are ideal for high-speed slalom. They also make nice ollie targets. Risk: Hitting a pylon head on at high speed
can send a skater sprawling.
Barrels are found in the skateboard park and in the construction site.
Mass / Friction: 20kg / .1
Use: Barrels are good for measuring big air. A superior skater can clear a dozen barrels in a jump.
Risk: Barrels do roll and they don’t support rail moves very well.
Location: Skaters lose their boards in all arenas and on the streets.
Mass / Friction: 3kg / .05
Use: A rolling skateboard can be cleared by an ollie or simply plowed through.
Risk: Loose skateboards pose little risk to skaters.
Location: Skaters are in every arena and on the streets.
Mass / Friction: Approx. 70kg / .05
Use: Other skaters will teach you tricks and help guide you through the arenas.
Risk: Some of the skaters are more aggressive than others. Since they have significant mass and move freely about the arena, a player must be aware of other skaters at all times. Colliding with another skater at low relative speeds is fairly safe, but at high relative speeds, one or both skaters may crash.
Location: Rats wander about the city streets and on the construction site.
Mass / Friction: 1kg / .3
Use: Rats are moving obstacles which can be used as mini-ramps for clearing curbs. Otherwise, they simply slow the skater who hits them.
Risk: Rats can be distracting. Their motion is chaotic. If they are hit right before an Ollie, they may cause the skater to lose precious momentum because of their high friction.
