Vertigo Design Power Ups Scattered throughout the Vertigo world are small objects which can be retrieved and used by skaters. These objects are represented by iconic animated graphics which give the skater some indication of their nature from a distance. Not all power-ups provide unadulterated benefit. Some, like coffee, have side-effects in addition to their immediate boost to performance. Players activate power-ups and consume them by rolling into them. The power-up icon removes, a trigger sound indicates that the power-up has been used, and the power-up goes into effect. The five basic categories of power-up
are protective gear, food & water, miscellaneous consumables, ethereal
imagery, and product logos.
Protective gear is important for extreme skaters. If a skater is well-protected by a helmet, pads, and gloves, he can survive more serious crashes with much less impact on health and stamina. Protective gear does wear out as the skater suffers crashes. Players can easily gauge the status of their gear and that of other players by viewing their avatars. Helmets and pads appear as bit-mapped images on the polygonal human forms. Protection: A helmet is the most effective gear for surviving major crashes. Skaters should wear helmets at all times. Disadvantage: A helmet reduces agility slightly.
Protection: Kneepads are good protection against forward spills off the board. They also provide some protection against collisions with blocks, firehydrants and curbs. Disadvantage: Kneepads have no impact on agility. Protection: Kneepads are good protection against

Elbowpads have no impact on agility.
Protection: Wrist guards are good protection against
forward spills off the board. They also allow a skater to trail his hands
against nearby surfaces for balance at high speeds.
Wrist guards have a slight affect on agility. In particular, performing indies may be more difficult since they require hand manipulation of the skateboard. Protection: Provide some protection against breaking
board when executing a railslide.
Railslides have no impact on agility. They do reduce friction during railslides. Bananas,
Apples, Grapes, Bottled Water, and Bread
All of these items will increase stamina
when stamina is reduced from lack of water or food.
Overeating reduces agility and stamina in the short term. Longer term it also impacts health. Power Up: Soft drinks and hamburgers increase stamina when stamina is reduced from lack of food or water. Side Effects: Long term consumption of these foods will deteriorate a skater’s health, increase his mass, and reduce stamina and agility.
Power Up: Drinking coffee raises blood pressure
and stimulates release firing of neurons. The short term effects of coffee
use are mildly increased strength, stamina and agility. The skater is also
more prone to suffer injury from accidents.
Some time after consumption of coffee, the skater will have reduced levels of strength, stamina and agility. Long-term Side Effects: Some time after consumption of coffee,
the skater will have reduced levels of strength, stamina and agility.
There are a number of other undocumented game power-ups that like the door to the Lady or the Tiger, reveal their nature only after being selected. These mysterious powerups are represented by more ethereal graphic icons. Skull, Mushroom, Flaming Maple Leaf, Ankh , Heart and Dagger Tattoo Product logos power-ups provide slight
improvements in performance. They represent good products that we all agree
we feel should be promoted in our epic virtual experience.
