Storm Drain

Description:

The storm-drain is a dangerous place to venture into. It features full pipes, very steep walls and drains which fall into the bowels of the earth. The tribe who claims the storm drains as turf are a pale, wiry bunch. They skate well at high speeds and catch outrageously big air.

Power-ups in the storm-drain arena tend toward miscellaneous consumables and ethereal icons. The storm-drain tribe adheres to an ethic which is obscure and apparently chaotic. They may be dangerously aggressive or nearly spiritual in their dedication to their craft.

Features:

Full pipes. Huge curved surfaces. Ramped walls to die for. Bottomless pits. Many ethereal power ups.

Scoring:

Scoring emphasis is on velocity, big air, risks. Skaters who feel no fear score big points in the storm drains.

Native Tribe:

Following the tradition of the artist formerly known as Prince, the inhabitants of the storm drain do not appear to have a name. They are paler, grungier and skinnier than the other tribes. They appear to take pleasure in ultra high speed passes over and past each other. They catch big air that above-ground ramp skaters would only dream of. Some players find them to be antagonistic, others befriend them easily and learn their ways.

Sample Game Play:

It is dark in the first full-pipe of the storm drain. Fortunately, you’ve got company. One of the Thrashers is playing wing-man on your right.

Distant sketch-sketch sounds and echoing voices tell you there is good skating ahead. The smooth cement walls give your wheels a satisfying grumble as you pick up speed.

A high open pipe joins this one up ahead. Perched on its edge is the strangest-looking skater you’ve seen. He shouts some unintelligible signal and dives down toward you. He veers aside at the last minute, but your concentration is broken. Without realizing it, you’ve come to the edge of a huge round room that appears to drop for hundreds of feet. As your board pulls away under your feet like a roller-coaster car, you realize that it is time to do some serious skating…

Layout:

The storm drain consists of half-pipes, elbows and large rooms.

    1. Entranceway.
    2. Tunnels down under ground.
3. Tunnel cross-section.

    1. Entranceway.
The entrance to the storm drain is forbidding and yet alluring.

2. Tunnels down under ground.

The steeply-sloping storm drain tunnels give the player a taste of the danger to come.

3. Tunnel cross-section.

The storm drain pipes are big and speedy. Besides the fast surface, they present risks like vertical pipes. One potential hazard in the storm drain is running water.
